Want Something Lower?

The deepest and lowest toned of our three beginner cedar flutes, our Native American style F# flute is the next step to advance your flute playing. These flutes are harder to play than our G or A flutes because as flutes move down in pitch they get longer and the finger hole spacing moves further apart and further down on the flute. That said, many beginners find this key suitable, especially if they have larger hands or some flute playing experience. Scroll down to watch a sound demo and learn more about key of F# flutes!

Learn About Western Red Cedar Wood

Western red cedar holds a special significance to our
Pacific Northwest tribes. Every part of this majestic tree is used to this day
by our indigenous peoples> The bark is used to make baskets, or pounded into
a fiber that is spun and woven. It is carved into canoes, totem poles, and used
to construct houses. The foliage is used as smudges and medicine.

We hold this wood in very high regard and not a single piece our flute wood
goes into a landfill.

Western red cedar is a light weight wood. Many people are surprised by how light
cedar flutes feel. Some believe that light weight woods are less valuable, but
the truth of the matter is that cedar is one of the optimal woods for flute
making. The wood lends a resonance to the voice of the flutes. This is a
vibration that you can feel in the body of the flute and deep in your chest as
you play. It also lends a deep and complex richness to the tone of the flute,
but don’t take our word for it! Listen to the sound samples of our beginner
flutes and see for yourself. They are every bit as lovely as a high end flute!

Western red cedar naturally ranges in color from
a warm light golden hue to a rich red brown and everything in between. We offer
two options for flute color but both are the same wood. Natural heartwood cedar
flutes are unstained western red cedar, and our Iron stained flutes are western
red cedar that has a natural food safe stain applied to darken the wood. The
color of the flute doesn’t affect the voice or tuning at all, so choose the one
that you are most attracted to! Dark and mysterious or warm and inviting. Which
best suites your personality?
