Meet the Iron Stained Cedar Basic A

This is a Native American style A flute made of western red cedar with a natural, iron stain applied to darken the wood into a rich black color. This transparent stain allows the beautiful wood grain to show through adding character to the flute. Our iron stained flutes are made from the same wood as our heartwood cedar flutes, they are only different in appearance. Both colors of Basic flute have the same careful tuning and voicing as our more expensive flutes.

The Basic A is our smallest of the three keys of “Basic” model flutes we offer. This makes it a wonderful choice for beginners and especially good for someone who has small or inflexible hands. For instance someone with arthritis might find this flute to be easier to play than the other two options because the finger hole spacing is closer together and further up on the body of the flute. This flute is the highest sounding of the three Basic flutes. It has a bright and cheerful voice that will lift your mood.
Many of our customers find that when they spend time playing their flutes it improves their hand dexterity. This is why we offer these three keys as an entry into the world of Native American style flute playing. Start small and advance to the lower keys as your hands become more flexible!

The Stellar Basic A flute is a Native American style flute, which means it has a two chamber design with a piece (we call the block) that sits on top to channel the air. Like many modern Native American flutes , our flutes are tuned to feature the pentatonic minor scale. This flute is tuned to the key of A which means that the lowest note plays the key of A. These flutes are tuned to the universal standard 440hz tuning which means they are compatible with most other instruments. That all might sound pretty confusing if you are new to music, but rest assured, you don’t really need to know any of that to enjoy your flute. You don’t need to read music either. Your flute will come with a handy fingering chart with pictures of what holes to cover. They are very beginner friendly.

Measurements

This flute is 21 ½ inches long with a 7/8 inch bore. The fingering holes are (from center to center) approximately 1 inch apart. The distance from the mouth end of the flute to the first finger hole is approximately 9 ¾ inches.
