This flute is made from a light orange piece of hemlock. It is technically a softwood because the tree has needles rather than leaves, but it is very dense and heavy for a softwood. It has a lovely silky feel and a nice weight. The wood has a bold and striking grain pattern. Hemlock is one of my favorite woods for flutes because it adds a rich tember to the voice of the flute.  Listen to the video to hear the flute being played. Scroll through the carousel of photos to find the video.

Each of these flutes will have a fancy low profile block that I have chosen to compliment the colors and character of the wood. The block might be a little different than what is pictured, but rest assured i will choose one that i think complements your unique flute best.

This flute is tuned to a Hijaz scale which has a Hebrew or middle eastern sound to it. This style of flute is more difficult to play than our Native American styles of flute because of the uneven hole spacing and the lowest hole being set much further down on the body of the flute. Some people learn to play this hole with their pinky finger. I prefer to stretch my ring finger to cover it. We don’t’ yet have a dedicated booklet for the Hijaz flutes, but they do come with a finger chart that is specific to this unique scale.

Measurements

This flute is 22 inches long with a 7/8 inch bore diameter.
It is 10 1/4 inches from the mouth end to the first fingering hole. The hole spacing is irregular on purpose to accommodate the Hijaz scale. The top 5 holes are spaced between 3/4 of an inch and 1 1/8 of an inch apart center to center, the lowest hole is spaced 1 7/8 inches apart from the rest of the holes making it easier to play with the pinky finger.

Is This The Right Flute For Me?

These unique and beautiful flutes are a little more difficult to play than a Native American style flute because they have an irregular fingering hole size and spacing. The lowest hole is set much further down on the body of the flute and might be easier for people to reach with the pinky finger. Once you get used to this awkward reach, the flute plays as easily as a Native American style flute.
