This bright orange flute is made out of our Washington native Douglas fir wood. It is technically a softwood because the tree has needles rather than leaves, but it is very dense and heavy for a softwood. It has a lovely silky feel and a nice weight. This flute is 22 inches long with a 7/8 inch bore diameter.
It is 10 1/4 inches from the mouth end to the first fingering hole. The hole spacing is irregular on purpose to accommodate the Hijaz scale. The top 5 holes are spaced between 3/4 of an inch and 1 1/8 of an inch apart center to center, the lowest hole is spaced 1 7/8 inches apart from the rest of the holes making it easier to play with the pinky finger.
These unique and beautiful flutes are a little more difficult to play than a Native American style flute because they have an irregular fingering hole size and spacing. The lowest hole is set much further down on the body of the flute and might be easier for people to reach with the pinky finger. Once you get used to this awkward reach, the flute plays as easily as a Native American style flute.
